2021.12.04 01:37 ottolouis Abortion can be justified by our widespread tolerance of death
I'm pro-choice, and I'll admit that pro-life arguments are usually easier to make. (1) Killing innocent people is wrong, (2) fetuses are innocent people, (3) abortion is killing a fetus, and therefore, (4) abortion is wrong. The argument is simple, intuitive, and doesn't involve a lot of nuance. Usually, pro-choice supporters attack (2), and argue that fetuses aren't people. To the contrary, I do believe fetuses are people. I can't think of a definition of a human being that wouldn't describe a fetus. I even believe that life begins at conception — again, I can't think of a definition of life that would not also describe a human embryo or zygote. I wouldn't say fetuses are human at conception, but at some point before birth, fetuses do become living humans, and abortions kill them. So yes, I concede that abortions kill humans.
I think the correct premise to attack is (1). To say that "killing innocent people is wrong" is far too simple of a way to describe society's relationship with life and death. We clearly place a limit on the value of life, and accept otherwise avoidable deaths for the sake of our well-being.
Thousands of Americans are killed in car accidents every year. We could simply ban the use of automobiles, and save thousands of lives. We don't ban cars because driving is too beneficial. By reducing travel time, cars enable us to be more productive, interact with more people, and live in spread out communities that would otherwise consist of smaller properties and be more expensive. We accept all of this for the cost of accidents and countless deaths.
What about nut allergies? A couple hundred Americans die every year from allergic reactions to nuts. We could easily ban the production of nuts, and save what would accumulate to hundreds of lives over a few years, but we aren't even willing to outlaw Reese's Pieces to accomplish this. Society finds peanut butter too tasty to sacrifice for the lives of those allergic.
War? Considering the value pro-lifers place on human life, one would expect them to be radical pacifists. Is every president who knowingly sent soldiers to die a "killer"? Was it wrong to fight the Civil War and World War Two? No. Some wars are obviously unjust, but human life is sometimes the price that must be paid to live in a better world. Even the most moral wars require the sacrifice of innocent lives, and almost no one objects to this notion.
What about the slaughter of animals that happens every day? They aren't human, but they certainly feel more pain than fetuses. Seeing how most people are not vegetarians, it must be widely accepted that the taste and nutrition provided by animals outweighs the cost of their (painful) killings.
We are clearly willing to allow innocent life to die. Ultimately, there's a cost-benefit analysis going. When it comes to abortions, the cost is the life of the fetus, and the benefit is the woman being unburdened by parenthood. The thrust of the pro-choice argument really lies in this latter side of the equation.
Cost — Not all life has equal value. I think almost everyone would acknowledge this. (Whose life would you save, a 90 year-old in a vegetative state or Isaac Newton? The answer is pretty clear.) Aborted fetuses in particular have very little value. They do not have identities, thoughts, emotions or feel pain, and they are unwanted and unloved. They do have some value, but not much.
Benefit — Instead of having an obligation to raise a child, which will be incredibly burdensome, a woman can invest that time in her education or career. Children require around-the-clock supervision for the first few years of their lives, can't be left alone for the first ten, and still require resources for the first twenty. Abortion allows women to save this time — at least until they feel ready to have children — and invest it in more productive outlets.
Analysis — Ultimately, I think the benefit that abortion provides women clearly outweighs the cost. Again, I concede that an abortion is technically the killing of a human. But we allow people to die when we feel it can be justified, and abortion is such a case.

2021.12.04 01:37 Randomuser1520 What does the two-party system look like once we become the main voting demographic?
I'm guessing we are all *roughly* in the sameish voting category (just started voting or getting close to it). The conversation as what the future of voters is often one discussed. One major argument I've seen made by liberals is that the Democratic party will eventually become the only party with the country getting less religious, more racially diverse, and the rise of things like the internet and more access to info. And that the Republican party will just kinda die off. To be fair, the data does seem to back that up.
HOWEVER, I personally don't think young voters necessarily want to devolve into a one-party state, which usually doesn't end with good results. So what does that mean? Is there a future for conservatism in the future? And what does it look like? Or are we doomed for one party to run the show forever?

2021.12.04 01:37 StevieGMcluvin Just finished Iron Prince
IT WAS AMAZING.
I'm super picky and have a hard time finding new series that I like but this was just great.
The relationships are well done and realistic. The progression was really interesting and original from what ive seen so far. it really did feel like cradle meets enders game.
I have a minor issue with Viv and Grant. It just didn't fit her character to be into him considering everything he did to Rei.
I might be alone here but beating up his own friends after they jumped Rei didnt really seem like a positive thing to me. It just made him look even more like an asshole. He seems to enjoy flexing his power over those who are weaker than him while leaving the strong alone. He likes to call Rei a coward for fighting smart but if anything he's the coward.
I know Viv said he has his reasons for being a piece of shit but everyone has baggage. I really can't see anything he says justifying his behavior or her interest in him. It just felt so out of character for someone who's so loyal and protective of Rei. Even after their private talk he literally told Rei he would kill him if he could and the world would be a better place. Did Viv just ignore this or something?
I'd be fine with their relationship AFTER grants redemption arc. But he hasn't redeemed himself. Not even close. It really was confusing considering everything we know about Viv. Who cares if Grant is good looking? We're in a world of designer babies. Almost everyone is good looking.
Will wight said it best when he said "This would be like if Malfoy pulled a gun on Harry in front of the whole class, and the next day Hermione asked Malfoy out. Really soured me on that character for the rest of the book."
I still consider this a minor problem though and it seems like it's been beaten to death by now. The authors even addressed it. It didn't make me stop reading but it did make me like Viv less. Especially her sneaking around after how she treated catcher about cashe.
Overall this is now in my top 3 series of all time right behind cradle which is my top. I cant wait to see where Luke and Bryce take this book. Awesome work guys.
For anyone curious, chapter 1 of book 2 is now available on their patreon for only 5$

2021.12.04 01:37 PsychologicalTune249 How minimally prepared could you be and still pass step/comlex?
2nd year DO here doing well in class but haven’t started studying boards specific resources yet. I wanted to know for those of us taking P/F step next spring, how little do you (past or future test takers) think you could get by with in terms of minimal prep and still pass?
I want to start doing 3-4hday UW and FA all of spring semester and take Step1/level1 on may 1st and 15th respectively, *with literally no dedicated*.
If I’m passing nbmes well before then (like a few consecutive passes > 1 mo out), then I’m taking that shit. If not, I will push my exams back and take a dedicated, but that’s not what I’m planning on doing. Anyone else feel the same?
I read the horror stories about failing and sympathize, but they made this exam P/F for us not to be so stressed so if we stress like before, then what’s the point? Also I feel like most med students are pretty neurotic and I might not get much sympathy, but I literally didn’t study for the MCAT and scored a 501 before having 2nd semester of Biochem and ochem, and I want to have a summer that’s not just grinding PhD minutiae factoid BS. I literally would read Harrison’s cover to cover that summer instead.

2021.12.04 01:37 blackwellsucks Getting the Error Code: 2002-2060 message post-2.0 update
Has anyone gotten this error since the update was released? I just got it tonight. I’m seeing some posts on here from a while ago saying that it’s likely a software issue, something to do with SD cards. I’m wondering if that’s likely still the case post-update or if anything may have changed. I’ve seen the article on Nintendo’s support page about Error Codes 2002-2049 to 2002-2060. If anybody has any advice or answers that would be greatly appreciated!
